Private Pet Cremation

In a private cremation, your pet is cremated individually and the ashes returned to you. The term is used inconsistently across the industry, so the single most useful question to ask a provider is how many pets are in the chamber during the cycle and how identity is tracked from pickup to return.

How it works, step by step

  1. 1

    Intake and identification

Your pet is received at home, at a veterinary clinic or at the facility and tagged with an identifier that stays with them.

  2. 2

    Scheduling

Individual cycles are scheduled rather than batched, which is why turnaround is usually quoted in days rather than hours.

  3. 3

    Cremation cycle

One pet per chamber cycle. Ask whether the provider offers witnessed cremation if being present matters to you.

  4. 4

    Processing and return

Remains are processed and placed in the urn or container you selected, with paperwork identifying your pet.

What affects the price

  • Pet weight — nearly every provider prices in weight bands
  • Whether pickup is from home, a clinic, or you deliver to the facility
  • Same-day or after-hours service
  • Urn or container selection, and whether a basic container is included
  • Optional memorial items such as paw prints or fur clippings
  • Local competition and drive distance in your market

We do not publish national averages. Where we hold enough verified provider prices for a market, the range appears on that city page; where we don't, the page says so.

Common questions

Is private cremation the same as individual cremation?
Usually, but not always. Some providers use 'private' for a partitioned chamber holding several pets at once. Ask directly whether only your pet is in the chamber for the full cycle.
Will I definitely get ashes back?
With a genuine individual cremation, yes. Providers should be able to explain how identification is maintained at each step. Ask for their chain-of-custody process in writing.
How long does it take?
Turnaround depends on the provider's schedule and route days rather than on the cremation itself. Ask for a specific estimate at the time of arrangement.
