First, take the time you need

There is no legal or medical emergency in the minutes after a pet dies at home. You can sit with them. When you are ready, the practical steps below are all that is required.

Keep your pet cool and supported

Body changes begin gradually, and temperature is the main factor you can control.

  • Place your pet on a towel or blanket, on a washable surface.
  • Move them to the coolest practical room, away from direct sun and heat.
  • If it will be several hours before collection, a cooler surface such as a tiled floor or a wrapped ice pack alongside them helps.
  • Handle gently and support the body; some fluid release is normal.

Decide whether you need pickup

You can either arrange pickup from your home, or transport your pet yourself to a provider's facility. Pickup costs more; drop-off is usually the cheapest route and is often available same day.

Who to call

You can call a pet crematory or aftercare provider directly — you do not need to go through a veterinary clinic. If your regular clinic is open, they can also arrange it, though the default arrangement is often communal cremation.

Choose the aftercare you want

Decide whether you want ashes returned. Private (individual) cremation returns ashes; communal cremation does not. This is much easier to decide now than to change later.
